Effortlessly Reduce High-Resolution Image Sizes Online

Resize First or Compress First?

Two things make an image heavy: how many pixels it contains and how hard those pixels are compressed. A photo taken on a modern phone is often several thousand pixels wide, while a portal or website may display it at a fraction of that size. When the dimensions are much larger than the destination needs, reducing them first usually meets a size limit with far less visible damage than squeezing the quality of every pixel.

  • Use the Image Resizer when the picture is much larger than it needs to be, or when a form states exact pixel dimensions.
  • Use this compressor when the dimensions are already right but the file is still above a limit such as 50 KB, 100 KB or 1 MB.
  • Use the Image Converter when the destination rejects the file type, for example when only JPG is accepted.

For a very large photo, the sensible order is to resize, then compress, then convert only if the format is still wrong. Always check the preview slider before downloading, because the smaller the target, the more fine detail has to be given up. Our Image Compressor guide explains the modes and settings step by step.
