Which Image Size Should You Choose?

The right dimensions depend on where the picture will be shown, not on how large the original happens to be. Use the table below as a starting point, and always confirm the current requirement of the website or platform you are uploading to, because recommended sizes change over time. The Social Media tab in the tool already includes common sizes for Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, WhatsApp and TikTok.

Resize, Compress or Convert: Which One Do You Need?

These three jobs are easy to confuse, and choosing the wrong one is the most common reason an upload keeps failing.

  • Resize when the pixel dimensions are wrong, for example an image that is too wide for a layout or must be an exact square.
  • Compress when the only problem is a file-size limit such as "under 200 KB". Use the Image Compressor for that.
  • Convert when the destination does not accept the file type you have. Use the Image Converter for that.

The jobs often work together. A sensible order for a very large photo is to resize first, so the picture has the right dimensions, and then compress it if a size limit still applies.

Common Resizing Mistakes to Avoid

  • Enlarging a small image. Making an image bigger adds pixels but not detail, so the result stays soft. This is why Prevent Upscaling is switched on by default.
  • Using Stretch to force a new shape. Stretch changes the proportions of faces, circles and text. Choose Fit to keep the whole picture or Fill to crop it instead.
  • Resizing an already resized copy again and again. JPG and WebP files are re-encoded every time they are saved. Keep the original and always resize from it.
  • Choosing PNG for ordinary photographs. PNG is lossless, so photo files can stay large. JPG or WebP is usually the better output unless you need transparency.
  • Forgetting to check the edges after Fill. Fill crops the sides or the top and bottom. Look at the preview to be sure nothing important was cut off.
  • Ignoring the destination's own rules. A portal may require exact dimensions, a maximum size and a specific format all at once. Check all three before you upload.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I resize an image?

Upload your image, choose By Size, As Percentage or Social Media, enter the size or pick a preset, select the output format, then press Resize Image.

Can I resize an image to an exact width and height?

Yes. Enter the exact width and height in pixels, inches, centimeters or millimeters. Disable Lock Aspect Ratio only when you intentionally want a different proportion.

Can I resize an image in inches, centimeters or millimeters?

Yes. Choose Inches, Centimeters or Millimeters in the Unit menu and pick a DPI, such as 300 for printing. SAFIX converts the physical size into pixels and saves the DPI value inside JPG and PNG files.

Can I resize an image by percentage?

Yes. Open the As Percentage tab and drag the slider from 1% to 200% of the original size. Going above 100% enlarges the image, which adds pixels but not detail.

Can I set a maximum file size for the resized image?

Yes. Enter a limit in KB or MB under Target File Size. SAFIX lowers the quality of JPG, WebP or AVIF output just enough to stay under it, and tells you if the limit cannot be reached at the chosen dimensions. PNG, BMP and ICO output ignore this setting.

Can I resize multiple images at once?

Yes. Select multiple images and SAFIX will apply the same resize settings to the batch. You can download results one by one or use the batch ZIP download.

What happens if I enable Prevent Upscaling?

In the By Size tab, SAFIX will not create a width or height larger than the original image, which is useful when your goal is only to make images smaller. The As Percentage and Social Media tabs always give the size you ask for.

Will resizing an image reduce its quality?

When you reduce dimensions, some fine detail can naturally be lost because fewer pixels remain. SAFIX uses high-quality canvas resampling to make that reduction as clean as possible.

What is the difference between Fit, Fill and Stretch?

Fit keeps the whole image visible, Fill crops excess areas to cover the exact target, and Stretch forces the image to the exact dimensions and may distort it.

Does SAFIX upload my images to a server?

The resizing operation runs locally in your browser. Google Drive and Dropbox are optional third-party import services and have their own provider-specific privacy behavior.

Which formats are supported?

JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, BMP, SVG and ICO inputs are supported when the browser can decode them. Output availability can vary by browser for newer formats such as AVIF.

Does SAFIX try to preserve detail when reducing pixels?

Yes. When the image is reduced significantly, SAFIX uses multi-step high-quality downsampling followed by a restrained detail-recovery pass. This helps retain edge clarity, fine detail and natural color. It cannot recreate information that was never present in the reduced pixel grid, but it reduces avoidable softness from a single aggressive downscale.

Can I resize an image without changing its aspect ratio?

Yes. Keep Lock Aspect Ratio enabled. Change one dimension and SAFIX calculates the other based on the original proportions.

Can I resize an image for social media?

Yes. Open the Social Media tab, choose a platform such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, WhatsApp or TikTok, and pick a preset type. SAFIX fills in the width and height. Platforms change their recommended sizes from time to time, so check the current requirement before uploading.
