Which Image Format Should You Choose?

The best format depends on what the image is and where it will be used. Use this table as a quick reference, and remember that the destination, whether a portal, a website or an app, has the final say about which formats it accepts.

FormatBest forKeep in mind
PNGLogos, screenshots, graphics and images that need transparencyLossless, so photographs can become large files
JPGPhotographs, forms and job or ID uploadsNo transparency; transparent areas become white
WebPWebsite imagesSome older programs cannot open it
AVIFVery small modern web imagesYour browser must be able to create it; if the button is greyed out, it cannot be made here
BMPLegacy software and special workflowsUncompressed, so files are large, and it has no transparency
ICOFavicons and small iconsCreates a single 64 × 64 icon; start from a square image

Common Conversions and What to Expect

  • PNG to JPG: useful when a form accepts only JPG or when a photograph is too heavy as PNG. Transparent areas turn white.
  • JPG to PNG: gives you a lossless container and transparency support for later editing, but it cannot restore detail that the JPG already lost, and the file usually gets larger.
  • Any format to WebP: often produces a lighter file for websites. Check that the place you upload to accepts WebP.
  • WebP or AVIF to JPG: the usual fix when an app, form or older program refuses modern formats.
  • Image to ICO: creates a favicon-style icon from a logo or picture.

Converting changes only the file type. If the dimensions are wrong, use the Image Resizer. If a size limit such as 100 KB is the problem, use the Image Compressor. The full Image Converter guide explains every setting in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

Upload your PNG, choose JPG in the Target Output Format row and press Download Image. JPG cannot store transparency, so any transparent areas are filled with white automatically.

Does converting an image reduce its quality?

PNG and BMP outputs are lossless. JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy formats, and SAFIX saves them at a fixed high quality setting of 92%. A converted file can never contain more detail than the original, so converting a low-quality JPG to PNG will not make it sharper.

Will the converted file be smaller?

Not always. Converting a photo from PNG to JPG or WebP usually makes it smaller, while converting JPG to PNG often makes it larger. If you need to reach a specific limit such as 100 KB, convert first and then use the Image Compressor.

Which format is best for websites?

WebP and AVIF are designed for the web and often give smaller files than JPG or PNG for the same picture. JPG remains the safest choice for photographs that must open everywhere, and PNG suits graphics that need transparency.

Why is the WebP or AVIF button greyed out?

Those formats are created by your browser itself. If your browser cannot encode them, SAFIX disables the button instead of producing a wrongly labeled file. Choose another format or try a different or newer browser.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Add multiple images, choose one output format and every image is converted with that setting. Download All packs the results into a single ZIP file, and files with the same name are numbered so none is overwritten.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

For supported conversions the image is processed in your browser on your own device rather than being uploaded to SAFIX. If you import from Google Drive or Dropbox, that step uses those services, which have their own privacy terms.

How do I make a favicon or ICO file?

Choose ICO. SAFIX creates a single 64 × 64 icon, so a square source image gives the best result. Transparent areas stay transparent unless you tick Add solid white background.
